Jahrome Hughes, the Storm's halfback, has quashed rumors about a potential move to the new Western Bears as they prepare to join the NRL in 2027.
Hughes emphasized that he intends to spend his entire career in Melbourne, a stance that could complicate efforts for rival clubs to lure fellow Storm player Ryan Papenhuyzen, who is also in discussions about future contracts.
With the announcement of the Western Bears' entry into the league, speculation has surged regarding marquee signings.
The Bears are expected to benefit from an increase in the salary cap, potentially allowing the first-ever $2 million player in NRL history.
Notably, Papenhuyzen has been mentioned as a key candidate for such a contract, especially since he is currently bound to a short-term deal with the Storm until the end of 2026.
Hughes, who also will be out of contract before the 2025 season, has been linked to significant offers, reflecting his recent rise as one of the top playmakers in the league.
NRL reporter David Riccio recently noted on SEN Radio that both Hughes and Broncos star Payne Haas could be prime targets for the Bears.
However, following Hughes' clear commitment to the Storm, it seems other clubs might not need to invest time in pursuing him.
Hughes stated, "I want to remain in Melbourne for the remainder of my playing career," effectively shutting down any speculation about a departure from the Storm.
