Melbourne Storm legend Cameron Smith has expressed concern regarding Nelson Asofa-Solomona amidst speculation about the front-rower's future with the club. Smith suggests that coach Craig Bellamy is likely to be "highly frustrated" with Asofa-Solomona, particularly following the player's latest suspension, which might signify that he has "played his last game for the club."

Asofa-Solomona received a three-game ban last week for delivering a high shot on Broncos forward Ben Talty, adding to his record of disciplinary issues. The imposing Kiwi international is positioned to make a comeback this season only if the Storm loses to the Bulldogs on Friday and subsequently makes it to the grand final.

Notably, Asofa-Solomona "missed the grand final last year due to suspension" and has not been favoured by Bellamy this season. The 29-year-old has participated in only 12 NRL matches so far in 2025, missing recent games due to rest periods for teammates Josh King and Stefano Utoikamanu.

With the new suspension, there is growing speculation that the Storm might consider parting ways with Asofa-Solomona during the upcoming offseason. Currently contracted until the end of 2027 at a salary of $850,000 per year, there are suggestions that the club could use that financial allocation to pursue Tino Fa'asuamaleaui should Asofa-Solomona depart.

In a Monday night segment on Channel 9, former Storm captain Smith acknowledged Asofa-Solomona's potential, stating he is among the top forwards in the league but only when he maintains focus. He noted, "Nelson Asofa-Solomona is about seven foot tall, so it's pretty hard to get down," referencing the high-contact incidents he has been involved in.

Reflecting on last year, Smith commented, "But think back to 12 months ago, he missed the grand final because of a suspension - he got done for a shoulder charge on Lindsay Collins. I believe in that grand final, if Nelson was a part of that game, I think Storm win."

Smith emphasized the importance of Asofa-Solomona's presence, stating, "He's a huge loss. If you get Nelson on his game, he's one of the best front-rowers in the game when he's got his head on and is playing well. He could really break a game open and he will be sorely missed this week. I think it would be highly frustrating for Craig Bellamy at the moment."
