Meeting between Burton and Gould to Lock Down Future at Belmore
Matt Burton, the five-eighth for the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, is eager for an extension with the club.
The premiership-winning player held discussions with his manager and Bulldogs executive Phil Gould, according to a report from the Sydney Morning Herald. The meeting took place in Wollongong on Easter Monday and focused on securing a long-term deal for Burton.
With rumors swirling about a possible transfer and two promising young halves, Lachie Glavin and Mitch Woods, positioned as future replacements, Burton aimed to clarify his situation and initiate talks for a contract extension. His current deal is set to expire at the end of November next year.
Sources suggest that the Perth Bears have been keeping an eye on Burton, hoping to sign him for their inaugural season next year. However, it's expected that he won't depart early.
Several clubs may present attractive offers if an agreement with the Bulldogs isn't finalized before Burton becomes eligible to negotiate with other teams in November.
Despite these possibilities, indications are that Burton remains a pivotal part of the Bulldogs' future plans. His strong rapport with coach Cameron Ciraldo, dating back to their time together at Penrith, also contributes to his stability in the club.
Burton's exceptional versatility could see him transition into a full-time center for the Bulldogs, allowing Woods to step into the playmaking role as the club looks ahead to 2027.
