Bulldogs Release Halfback Joseph O'Neill Immediately

The Canterbury Bulldogs have officially announced the release of young halfback Joseph O'Neill from his contract, effective immediately.

Recently promoted to the club's Top 30, the 22-year-old talent is reportedly set to join the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Dragons have been approached for further comment and clarity on the situation.

O'Neill has made 42 appearances in the NSW Cup for the Bulldogs and was an integral part of the team that clinched the Jersey Flegg Cup premiership in 2023.

In a brief statement, the Bulldogs confirmed his departure to pursue an opportunity with another NRL team and expressed their best wishes for him and his family moving forward.

Due to the strong competition for the halfback position at Belmore, O'Neill was not expected to secure a spot in the NRL squad, especially with Cameron Ciraldo having several number sevens available.

As the Bulldogs look towards the 2026 season, it remains uncertain how they will proceed, though Lachlan Galvin may be the frontrunner for the number seven jersey, while promising player Mitchell Woods is anticipated to make his NRL debut in the upcoming campaign.
