The Bulldogs' build-up to their NRL season opener in Las Vegas has been complicated by new interchange regulations that force teams to alter their bench planning.
The revised rule allows clubs to name six players on the bench but restricts them to using only four during the match.
For the special overseas fixture teams can take up to 22 players to the United States, giving coaches a somewhat larger travelling pool.
Cameron Ciraldo is expected to include two extra squad members among those travelling with the Bulldogs as a precaution.
While the NRL has agreed to cover flights and accommodation for participating clubs, any extra travel or lodging beyond that remains the responsibility of the teams.
"With the new interchange rule, and having to carry two extra players on the bench, we wanted also to take a couple of extras, just in case."
The change forces clubs to balance match-day flexibility against the logistical and financial impact of taking more players abroad.
One selection dilemma has already been settled, with youngster Mitchell Woods ruled out of Round 1 due to injury.
The trip to Las Vegas therefore presents both a planning headache and an opportunity as Canterbury prepare to face the St George Illawarra Dragons.
