Reed Mahoney question emerges at Bulldogs amid new development around NRL replacement

Recent developments surrounding Bailey Hayward's contract extension and promotion to the Bulldogs' starting lineup have raised questions about Reed Mahoney's future role in Canterbury's squad for the remainder of the NRL season. Hayward's new deal, which keeps him at the club until 2028, coincides with a notable decline in Mahoney's game time this year, particularly following the mid-season addition of Lachie Galvin.

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo gave insights into the team's strategy by opting to bench Mahoney and start Hayward during the crucial round 23 victory over the Warriors. Although Mahoney was initially named as the starting hooker, he played only the last 16 minutes of the match, while Hayward showcased an impressive performance, playing for 69 minutes and contributing significantly to the team's efforts. Kurt Mann, another utility player and Maroons Origin representative, also received 35 minutes off the bench, further limiting Mahoney's playing time.

Ciraldo confirmed that Hayward will continue as the starting No. 9 for the upcoming game against the Roosters, sparking further speculation about Mahoney's position. The 27-year-old has already committed to join the Cowboys next season, which adds complexity to his current situation as his playing time has been reduced due to Galvin's arrival.

Veteran commentator Andrew Voss raised concerns about Mahoney's fit within the team's structure moving forward, assessing, "If you've moved Reed Mahoney from the starting hooker then I don't think he adds value to your bench," during a recent segment on SEN radio. This commentary emphasizes the growing uncertainty around Mahoney's role in the Bulldogs, particularly as Hayward's stamina and Mann's versatility present strong options for Ciraldo.

With Hayward's capability to endure longer minutes and Mann's flexibility as a hooker, Ciraldo faces the challenge of finalizing his ideal 17-man lineup. The presence of two smaller players like Mahoney and Mann on the bench complicates the interchange strategy, as it allows for fewer options. Consequently, if the coach seeks to add a more powerful forward, Mahoney's spot appears to be the most vulnerable.
