Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters is facing another setback as he may lose a key player for the Ashes series following Payne Haas' decision to join Samoa. Broncos teammate Kotoni Staggs is contemplating a similar switch. Staggs has represented Australia in three Tests this year while previously playing for Tonga in both 2019 and 2022.

The dynamic centre has been crucial to the Broncos' recent performance, helping propel the team close to the NRL top-four rankings. Currently, Brisbane sits in sixth place, just two points shy of the fourth-placed Warriors, and they have a match against the struggling Knights this Sunday.

Staggs' impressive form has put him in contention for a spot on the Kangaroos' end-of-season tour to England, marking the first Ashes series in 22 years. Walters has already experienced a reduction in options for the centre position, with three Origin centres currently unavailable for Kangaroo selection.

Blues centre Stephen Crichton has been a reliable member of the Samoa team recently, while Queensland rookie Robert Toia has pledged his loyalty to Tonga. Additionally, Maroons centre Valentine Holmes is sidelined for the season due to a shoulder injury, significantly increasing Staggs' chances for a Test call-up.

Known for his aggressive style of play, Staggs has the perfect athleticism for Test matches. He also shares a good rapport with Walters, having been coached by him at the Broncos. However, Staggs indicated last week that a significant decision regarding his Test future looms, even as he remains focused on completing the NRL season with Brisbane.

"I can either play for Tonga or Australia," Staggs said. "I will see how I go for the rest of the season but my main focus is here and trying to win a grand final. Whatever comes after that. I will make a decision."
