Queensland legend Wally Lewis has urged Brisbane Broncos fans to temper their expectations for the 2025 season, as many appear frustrated with coach Michael Maguire.
After a string of poor performances, the Broncos found a much-needed spark, triumphing over the Titans 44-14 at Suncorp Stadium during Adam Reynolds' 300th NRL game.
Although the team had lost six of their previous seven matches, Reece Walsh's return significantly boosted their attack.
Maguire responded to criticism by moving Patrick Carrigan back to lock, shifting Kobe Hetherington to the bench, and dropping Selwyn Cobbo.
This reshuffle seemed to energize the team, which looked motivated to secure a place in the top eight.
Club legend Darren Lockyer noted the timing of the win as crucial, stating, "A pressure relief...under a bit of pressure the stage was set for them to perform.
And they did that first half.
And hopefully it puts a bit of fun going to work.
Because when you are losing it's no fun.
They are going into a bye now, I think the key for the Broncos is to back that performance up."
Despite the victory, Lewis expressed concern over the negative sentiment among fans, indicating that many are not yet supportive of Maguire's reforms.
"And it was disappointing...but on the street I was asked by a number of people about Michael Maguire," Lewis remarked on the show.
"'This bloke, surely he can't be a good coach for the boys...got to get rid of him already.' Boy, I was thinking you jump to conclusions already, and you are expecting him to take Rome in a day.
So, it was remarkable how quickly that had set in."
Lewis called for patience as the Broncos navigate their rebuild, emphasizing that it takes time to forge a successful team.
While the recent win is seen as a step in the right direction, the underlying discontent from fans poses a challenge for Maguire and the club going forward.
