Broncos player stays loyal, chooses short path

Broncos player signs one-year contract extension despite being offered two-year deal

Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington has signed a one-year contract extension with the team, despite being offered a two-year deal.

This decision has raised questions about his future, especially since he has been a key player under coach Michael Maguire, starting the season at lock.

Recently, however, Hetherington has found himself on the bench as Patrick Carrigan returned to the lock position and Xavier Willison shifted to prop.

The Broncos have seen benefits from an additional big body in the front row, along with Hetherington's strong work ethic from the bench.

Maguire secured Hetherington's services for another season, yet it's noteworthy that the player chose a shorter contract.

According to reports from The Courier Mail, Hetherington's manager mentioned that the player preferred to keep his options open.

This strategy could be strategic, particularly with the upcoming entry of the Perth Bears in 2027.

Led by coach Mal Meninga, the Bears are expected to build their roster in the coming year and could offer tempting opportunities for players like Hetherington.

With marquee signings like Ryan Papenhuyzen and Jahrome Hughes being mentioned in relation to the Bears, they will likely have significant financial resources to attract other talents as well.

Starting November 1 this year, Hetherington will have the chance to negotiate with rival clubs, positioning himself for potential future deals.

His manager, Chris Haddad, expressed satisfaction with the decision to pursue a short-term contract, indicating a willingness to embrace the challenge it presents.

Overall, while the Broncos are pleased to retain Hetherington, the player is looking toward what possibilities the future may hold post-extension, with an eye on potentially more lucrative offers.
