The Brisbane Broncos have unexpectedly benefited from a last-minute contract fallout at the Melbourne Storm, with Aublix Tawha now positioned to play a significant role in Brisbane's forward lineup in 2026.
Tawha, turning 27 in August, was originally set to join the Storm after being released by the Dolphins due to salary-cap constraints.
However, the transfer collapsed at the last moment, allowing the Broncos to step in and secure the hard-hitting Kiwi player.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire is well aware of Tawha's capabilities, having previously played alongside renowned New Zealand Test enforcers Ruben Wiki and Quentin Pongia.
"That bodies well for us," Maguire told the Daily Telegraph.
"We're looking for defensive steel and aggression, and Aublix brings that edge."
Tawha has already demonstrated he belongs in the NRL. In just his sixth top-grade appearance last season, the former Wests Tigers and Dolphins forward made a mark with a fierce confrontation involving Spencer Leniu, emphasizing the physical presence that has become his trademark.
The Broncos' pack is undergoing a subtle transformation following Kobe Hetherington's departure, and Tawha's arrival is seen as a strategic response - a player capable of complementing enforcers like Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan.
Maguire confirmed that Tawha has been one of Brisbane's standout trainers throughout the pre-season.
