The Brisbane Broncos have announced the death of former Managing Director and CEO Shane Edwards after his struggle with motor neurone disease.
Edwards passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 67, one year after his diagnosis.
He played an instrumental role during the club's Golden Era, leading as Managing Director and CEO from 1995 to 2002.
Under his leadership, the Broncos won the 1997 Super League Grand Final and the NRL premierships in 1998 and 2000.
While Edwards is remembered for his significant achievements on the field, his character and the relationships he fostered in the sport also stand out.
In a statement, the Broncos honored Edwards following the announcement of his death.
"He was a genuine league person who cared enormously about the game and, most importantly, its people," the statement said.
"He built relationships easily and authentically, and was held in great affection by those who worked alongside him."
"From the players and coaches to staff, members and supporters, as well as the media who dealt with him on a daily basis, Shane was universally liked and respected."
