Coby Black's outstanding NRL debut has raised significant concerns regarding the Brisbane Broncos' decision to release him in favor of securing Jonah Pezet.
During his first match with the Canberra Raiders against the North Queensland Cowboys, Black showcased his immense talent by scoring two tries and assisting another, contributing to a resounding 50-30 victory.
Additionally, Black scored nine goals from nine attempts, totaling 26 points, marking the highest score by a debutant in the history of professional rugby league in Australia.
His performance has sparked questions about why the Broncos allowed such a promising player to leave, especially when he had been seen as a potential successor to Adam Reynolds.
Brisbane's decision to sign Pezet from Melbourne and Parramatta from 2027 onwards prompted Black to request his release, which the Raiders were quick to accept.
While Pezet may develop into an exceptional player, the Broncos face scrutiny for letting Black go, particularly given his impressive showing in his debut.
On Triple M radio, journalist Ben Dobbin expressed concern over the Broncos' judgment, noting, "He'd been in the Broncos' system since he was 15."
He highlighted the club's history with developing talented halves and questioned overall management, indicating that "there is something not right at Brisbane."
NRL expert Nathan Durkin, also known as Rugby League Guru, supported this sentiment on social media, asserting that "the Broncos have made a huge mistake letting Black go."
He acknowledged that while it was just one game, Black's long-standing potential was evident and noted the importance of young players finding opportunities elsewhere.
