The Brisbane Broncos have taken a surprising step by dropping outside back Gehamat Shibasaki just before the crucial 2025 NRL Finals.
Shibasaki has been replaced by Jesse Arthars on the wing, while Deine Mariner will move to the centre position. The decision follows a breach of team standards by Shibasaki.
As reported by News Corp, Shibasaki arrived at training on Monday allegedly still under the influence of alcohol after a night out on Sunday.
Teammates were reportedly aware of his condition, prompting head coach Michael Maguire to discuss the matter with the club's CEO, Dave Donaghy, leading to the decision to drop him.
Shibasaki had just represented the Queensland Maroons earlier this year, and this significant decision comes as the team readies to face the Melbourne Storm on Thursday, a match that could help them secure a spot in the top-four.
"Honestly, there are no words. I love it. It's a dream come true," Shibasaki told Zero Tackle earlier this year upon making his Origin debut with the QLD Maroons, which resulted in them winning the 2025 shield in Sydney.
"A hundred per cent (it's the best moment in my career). This is the best ever and what I dreamed of when I was a kid.
