Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has responded to the NRL storm over the Panthers' "illegal" block play tactic, attempting to downplay the drama ahead of the grand final.
The Panthers' tactic of blocking runners to give Nathan Cleary more time to kick the ball has come under scrutiny, particularly after their dominant win against the Storm.
Rugby league reporter Paul Crawley raised the issue on NRL 360, suggesting that Cleary shouldn't be treated as a "protected species." However, Walters dismissed the controversy and stated that most teams use similar tactics.
He expressed his satisfaction with the Panthers' approach, stating, "I'm happy with it.
I am not concerned by it." Walters also acknowledged that protecting kickers is a crucial aspect of the game and commended the Panthers for executing the tactic effectively.
He added, "Penrith do it well, that's probably why everyone's whingeing about it.
They do it better than anybody else." Walters' response highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the legality of certain tactics in rugby league and the differing opinions among coaches and experts.
