Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has commended superstar fullback Reece Walsh for responding to his recent criticism, highlighting the unseen efforts he makes to enhance his game amid ongoing scrutiny. Recently, Walsh has faced criticism for his inconsistent performance, leading to calls for the 23-year-old fullback to develop a steadier rhythm.
Walsh has often been noted for his tendency to play at a faster pace than his teammates, which was particularly evident during the 22-2 defeat to the Melbourne Storm. A notable moment occurred in the 13th minute, where he attempted to pass the ball forward to Selwyn Cobbo during a break for a try, resulting in a forward pass that showcased his frustration.
His style has stirred frustration among fans, especially given that he has made several questionable passes recently. Former Broncos player Denan Kemp called for Walsh to find the balance in his game following the Storm game's outcome, emphasizing that he'd need to rise to the occasion amidst injuries to Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam, and Cobbo. Queensland legend Cooper Cronk also advised that Walsh shouldn't shy away from the bold plays that underscore his talent.
Despite the criticism, Coach Maguire defended Walsh, explaining his value within the Broncos squad. When club legend Corey Parker questioned Walsh's erratic gameplay and the frustration it brings to fans, Maguire quickly supported the fullback, noting his hard work and dedication in responding to feedback each week.
"I will give you an example of Reece last night," Maguire stated on SEN Radio. "He stayed out for an hour after training doing extras. That says a lot about a player wanting to be at their best. That is why he is such a competitor.
"He is in a position that sometimes the play is going to come off, and sometimes it sits right on the margin. In the last couple of weeks, I guess he has had one or two forward passes. So he spends time out on the field practising that over and over so he can get that right when the next time comes."
