Brisbane Broncos chase historic fifth title

Brisbane Broncos gun on cusp of re-signing after stunning backflip on Kevin Walters decision

Chelsea Lenarduzzi could join an exclusive Brisbane Broncos group if her side beats the undefeated Sydney Roosters in Sunday's NRLW grand final.

The 30-year-old prop and teammates Julia Robinson and Ali Brigginshaw are chasing a fifth premiership together. Only Broncos greats Kevin Walters and Michael Hancock have reached five titles with the club.

Broncos captain Tamika Upton has won a record five NRLW titles, while Lenarduzzi, Robinson and Brigginshaw are the only players to have claimed four at one club.

Lenarduzzi's path to the milestone began with a change in direction from athletics. She won the national open women's shot put title in 2015, 2016 and 2018, but missed selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games after the qualifying standard rose.

"I was pretty close for the Gold Coast in 2018," Lenarduzzi told AAP.

"I won the national title that year but the qualifier changed. I got the old qualifier but they put it up a bit that year so I missed out.

"Track and field is so hard because it is very individual and self-funded. I started playing rugby league before the NRLW existed but when that took off in 2018 it was pretty hard to say no."

Since her 2018 debut, the Queensland and Australia representative has scored 22 tries in 68 games, including grand-final tries in 2019 and 2020.

Hancock, now part of the Broncos NRLW staff, has been involved with the program since 2018 and works in logistics while continuing to help the outside backs.

"He is very humble but we remind him that he has won five premierships," Lenarduzzi said.

Lenarduzzi called sharing the journey with Robinson and Brigginshaw "special".

"I love the Broncos and I am going to make it count," Lenarduzzi said.
