The future of Blaize Talagi with the Penrith Panthers has become increasingly uncertain. This uncertainty surfaced when rugby league legend Andrew Johns questioned Talagi's prospects at the club during a recent discussion.
Initially, Talagi held the position of first-choice five-eighth for the Panthers throughout most of the 2026 season. However, his role has diminished recently as Jack Cogger has emerged as the preferred pick for head coach Ivan Cleary.
Since Round 21, Talagi has not started as five-eighth. Cleary has also opted for Jack Cole in moments when Cogger has been unavailable.
Talagi's most recent appearance was during a tough Round 24 loss to the Sydney Roosters, where he came off the bench for a mere 15 minutes.
This situation led former player Ruan Sims to question why Talagi, known for his offensive skill, has seen reduced playing time on the show *Immortal Behaviour*. Sims specifically asked Johns to provide insight into this decision.
Johns speculated that Talagi's diminished involvement stemmed from defensive shortcomings. "Ivan is backing his defence," he stated, reflecting on the young player's struggles.
Johns pointed out a match against Canterbury where Talagi had difficulties, resulting in a dip in his confidence. He mentioned how if players exhibit weaknesses, opposing teams will exploit them. "It's an area in his game that he has to go to improve, Blaize," Johns concluded.
Given Cleary's focus on defense, Johns expressed skepticism about Talagi reclaiming a starting position. He stated, "I can't see Blaize getting a start," especially with Talagi currently on the extended bench.
