Maroons mentor Billy Slater found himself in a bit of a pickle when questioned about his response to Blues rival Michael Maguire's subtle jibe.

Following NSW debutant Joseph Suaalii's early exit in Game 1 after a questionable tackle on Reece Walsh, many speculated it was a deliberate move to target the dynamic fullback.

Former Maroons legends Johnathan Thurston and Nate Myles weren't shy about expressing their disgust at the incident, but Slater remained tight-lipped when probed about the hit in post-game interviews.

In an exclusive chat with James Hooper on NRL360, Maguire added fuel to the fire with his comments, saying, "I think you've got to make sure you don't live in glass houses.

It was one of those unfortunate things that happens in games, but targeting a player is not acceptable in this space...

Glass houses, it's an interesting one."

Slater's reaction to Maguire's remarks was akin to a tennis player facing a powerful serve - a bit awkward and uncertain.

It seems like the rivalry between the Maroons and Blues is heating up off the field as much as it does on the pitch.

Rugby League fans will be eagerly waiting to see how this rivalry plays out in future clashes.
