Queenslanders are known for their stoic acceptance of selection calls, but Maroons coach Billy Slater has found himself having to stand firm in defense of a controversial decision.

Slater has faced criticism for including Selwyn Cobbo on the bench for the State of Origin series opener, with questions swirling about how the Broncos center will fit into the game plan for Wednesday night.

Cobbo, alongside hooker Harry Grant, forms part of a lean Queensland bench, with the young gun capable of slotting into the backline should injuries strike - a scenario that has played out in four of the last six Origins.

Should game one unfold without any casualties, Slater will need to get creative in utilizing the powerful speedster, whose selection has spurred doubt from former Maroons coach Paul Vautin.

Defending his choice, Slater emphasized the meticulous process behind his selections, emphasizing the dedication and scrutiny he has put into studying the Queensland players.

"In this role, you have to make tough decisions," Slater explained.

"But the time and effort I've invested in analyzing the players gives me confidence in my choices - that's just part of the job."
