Selwyn Cobbo's future with the Brisbane Broncos is uncertain as speculation swirls around his potential exit when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Reports emerged over the weekend, especially after Cobbo was dropped from the starting side for a round 14 victory against the Titans.
These rumors intensified with claims that Cobbo had held talks with South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett about joining the Rabbitohs in 2026.
Bennett has become a well-known admirer of Cobbo, praising him during his tenure at the Dolphins.
However, he has rejected the notion of any secret meetings or negotiations.
"I don't know where this report has come from but I haven't had a single meeting with Selwyn Cobbo.
I don't know him.
I've never met him," Bennett stated emphatically to News Corp.
He went on to clarify, "Look, Selwyn is a wonderful talent but there's been no discussions for him to come here.
For a start, with the salary cap the way it is, we can't afford him.
Selwyn isn't going to take a pay cut to come to Souths, so it's not even an option for us anyway.
I've had no chats with him."
Currently, Cobbo is earning around $650,000 at the Broncos, but the club's salary cap situation leaves his future uncertain.
Reports indicate that the Broncos have not made him a formal offer, as they focus on re-signing centre Kotoni Staggs.
With the emergence of players like Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars as viable first-graders, alongside Grant Anderson's planned arrival from Melbourne in 2026, Cobbo's chances of remaining with Brisbane appear slim.
Should the Broncos decide to keep Cobbo, it would likely involve a short-term one-year extension, allowing him the option to pursue more lucrative opportunities with expansion teams such as Perth or PNG from 2027.
