NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has addressed rumors regarding Wayne Bennett potentially coaching the new Papua New Guinea franchise set to enter the competition in 2028.

Abdo clarified that no formal offer has been extended to Bennett, who remains under contract with South Sydney until the end of 2027.

Reports from au.news.yahoo.com confirm that Bennett acknowledged an approach from the Australian Rugby League Commission about the PNG position, but he is not rushing to make a decision.

Given Bennett's successful history with the Broncos and the Dolphins during their entries into the league, he is seen as a strong candidate for the role.

However, both the NRL and Bennett need to proceed cautiously due to his ongoing commitment to Souths.

Abdo stated, "We wouldn't (ask him to break the Souths contract)." He emphasized that while discussions are taking place regarding the future of the franchise, "No offers have been made, no formal negotiations have even started.

That's a matter for down the track."

The situation reflects careful planning and coordination by the NRL as they consider the ideal leadership for the upcoming team, ensuring respect for existing contracts and commitments.
