Bennett's Blow: Coaching Dreams Scrambled

Calls for NRL rule change after Wayne Bennett blocked from becoming next Kangaroos coach

Calls for a rule change within the NRL and ARL Commission are gaining traction after Wayne Bennett was blocked from becoming the next Kangaroos coach while he is still affiliated with South Sydney.

With Mal Meninga stepping down from coaching to lead the Perth Bears, the NRL seeks a new Kangaroos mentor.

Initially, Brad Fittler was considered the frontrunner but has since withdrawn, leaving Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters as the leading candidates.

Bennett, a legendary figure in coaching, expressed interest in the Kangaroos position, particularly with the upcoming Ashes series against England.

However, the ARL Commission has effectively banned him from taking on this role due to his ongoing commitment to Souths.

The Commission maintains that holding both positions would compromise the focus and dedication required for national coaching.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo emphasized this by stating, "The Commission has a long-held policy that the Kangaroos coach shouldn't be involved in coaching clubs as well, and that policy is going to continue." As Bennett is under contract with South Sydney until 2027, this policy directly impacts his eligibility.

There is a growing sentiment for the NRL to reconsider its policies, especially if Bennett is deemed the best candidate for the Kangaroos.

The excitement surrounding the upcoming end-of-season tour and the World Cup next year adds urgency to the debate over potential rule changes.

Bennett has previously coached Australia in 1998, 2004, and 2005, and his experience further fuels discussions on whether the rules should be altered to allow for his return.
