Souths are eyeing Wayne Bennett as their top pick to take over the coaching reins following the axing of Jason Demetriou.

The Rabbitohs have officially named the legendary coach as a frontrunner to step in and lead the team in the long term.

Demetriou was given the boot after a sudden board meeting on Tuesday night, with Ben Hornby stepping up to steer the NRL club on an interim basis.

Hornby's first challenge will be the tough showdown against the reigning premiers, Penrith Panthers, on Thursday night.

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly expressed confidence in Hornby's interim role but made it clear that they are eager to bring Bennett back to the helm.

Bennett famously guided Souths to the Grand Final in 2021 before passing the torch to Demetriou.

Solly stated that if Bennett is keen on a return next season, Souths would be thrilled to welcome him back.

Solly emphasized that Bennett's coaching style aligns well with the "distinctive" talents of the Souths players, particularly highlighting emerging star fullback Jye Gray.

"Wayne is definitely on the radar," Solly confirmed on Wednesday morning.

"He had a successful tenure here and left on excellent terms.

We will engage in discussions with Wayne, and if he's onboard and interested, we will definitely pursue that.

We are looking for someone who can mesh with this exceptional group of players and bring out their best.

It's a truly special bunch of lads, and we want a coach who can elevate their game."

In the high-stakes world of Rugby League coaching, Wayne Bennett's potential return to Souths could prove to be a game-changer, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to the team as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
