Benji Marshall recently provided an update regarding the futures of two key players, Jarome Luai and Jahream Bula, for the Wests Tigers. Following the announcement of his contract extension, fans hoped this move would facilitate player retention; however, the reality appears more complex.
Marshall signed a new agreement to remain head coach until the end of the 2030 season, marking a significant endorsement from the club during a turbulent period, particularly following the departure of CEO Shane Richardson.
Despite Luai's multiple exit clauses, Marshall expressed his confidence in Luai's commitment to the team. "I'm confident he'll be here," he stated during a media talk. He noted that he has been actively managing player relationships amid the club's instability to maintain alignment with his vision.
The second-year NRL coach shared that extensive discussions with his team have reassured players about the club's future direction. "I sat down with Jarome at length about where we're going, and he's fully committed to the club... Like fully committed," Marshall explained.
Marshall also acknowledged that while Luai faces criticism regarding his contract clauses, they are unlikely to change, yet Luai remains dedicated to the team. "If there's anyone I trust in the team the most, it's that guy," he emphasized.
In addition to Luai, Marshall is focused on retaining Jahream Bula, who will be in the final year of his contract next season. "We're working really hard on making that happen," Marshall noted, affirming his commitment to retaining key players as he aims for stability within the club.
He refrained from elaborating on recruitment specifics but maintained a positive outlook on the club's future and the importance of keeping core players to build a strong team moving forward.
