Former Rugby League star turned Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has defended his decision to take a mid-season trip to Fiji, emphasizing the importance of family and mental health in a sport that demands both physical and mental toughness.
Marshall, who knows a thing or two about the pressures of professional Rugby League, acknowledges the critics but stands by his belief that a well-rounded life off the field is essential for success on it.
Marshall's trip to Fiji, taken during the Tigers' bye week, raised some eyebrows among those who thought he should have been solely focused on fixing his struggling team's on-field issues.
But Marshall, drawing on his experience both as a player and now a coach, knows that sometimes a change of scenery and quality time with loved ones can be just what a team needs to reset and refocus.
"People get paid to give their opinions, and that's fine," Marshall said.
"But ultimately, the people within the group knew what we needed at that moment.
Family comes first, footy comes second.
It's a mantra I believe in and one that I lead by example."
The Tigers, who have been on a disappointing losing streak, are looking to turn their season around and avoid another wooden spoon finish.
Marshall is calling on his players to improve their discipline and focus, knowing that success on the field starts with a strong foundation off it.
In typical Rugby League fashion, Marshall is playing both offense and defense, defending his trip while also calling for a stronger team effort from his players.
With his leadership and experience, Marshall is looking to rally the Tigers and lead them to victory on and off the field.
