Ben Barba has officially transitioned from player to coach, securing a head coaching position for the 2026 rugby league season.
After his last NRL appearance in 2016, Barba announced his new role as the head coach of the South Sharks, who compete in the NQBE A Grade Men's competition.
The Sharks, established in 1945, celebrated a premiership victory in 2025, defeating the Mackay Brothers in the Grand Final. The team features a strong lineup, including players such as Marmin Barba, Sam Kasiano, and Mahe Fonua.
"I'm sure a few people already know but I have taken up the role as South Sharks RL Mackay A Grade coach for 2026," Barba confirmed.
"Something I'm absolutely looking forward to but nervous at the same time but with the help of the great people at the club I'm looking to make 2026 just as successful as this year."
Before retiring from professional play, Barba was a premiership winner with the Cronulla Sharks and earned the 2012 Dally M Medal. He is particularly remembered for his outstanding performance with the Canterbury Bulldogs, where he established himself as one of the league's best players.
Barba also played for the Brisbane Broncos in 2014 and was part of the North Queensland Cowboys squad in 2019, although he did not make an appearance for them before being let go.
