The Perth Bears are making strides in building their inaugural roster for the 2027 season by securing two key signings on Monday morning.

James McDonnell, a Super League standout, and rising outside-back Chris Vea'ila have both signed multi-year contracts with the Bears, as confirmed by the club.

McDonnell, an Irish international, will join the team in Western Australia on a two-year deal. He has established himself as a consistent forward in the English game, having played 87 Super League matches since his debut in 2020. He has had stints with clubs like Wigan, York, and Leigh prior to joining the Leeds Rhinos in 2023.

During the 2025 season, McDonnell had a breakout year, earning considerable acclaim for his work ethic, resilience, and impactful presence on the field.

The second-rower expressed that playing in the NRL has been a long-standing goal, viewing his opportunity with the Bears as a chance to challenge himself "against the best of the best" while also being part of a pioneering new chapter.

"It's been an ambition of mine to play in the NRL and I'm absolutely delighted to be given that chance with the Perth Bears," McDonnell stated.
