Ativalu Lisati is set to take on an expanded role with the Melbourne Storm in 2026, emerging as the top internal candidate to succeed Eli Katoa after Katoa's season-ending injury.
Katoa has been sidelined for the season due to a series of head injuries sustained while playing for Tonga during the Pacific Championships last November, creating a significant gap in Craig Bellamy's forward pack on the right edge.
While the Storm has other options like Joe Chan and off-season addition Jack Hetherington, Lisati is viewed as the most natural replacement, especially after his breakout 2025 season.
His rise was highlighted by a two-year contract extension in December and being awarded the Billy Slater Rookie of the Year title at the club's awards night.
Lisati's versatility and strong pre-season performances have positioned him as the frontrunner to take on Katoa's responsibilities, allowing him to solidify his place as a regular starter in Bellamy's system.
"If that's where 'Bellza' wants me, then that's what I'll do because I'll do anything for him," Lisati remarked to the Daily Telegraph. "Whether he wants me playing on the edge or in the ruck, I just do whatever is best for the team. I don't mind; I just want to play."
Despite the unfortunate injury, Katoa remains engaged with the club and is lightly training, providing emotional support to his teammates as Melbourne prepares for the next phase of their forward rotation.
