Angus Crichton to Switch to Rugby Union in 2027

Sydney Roosters star Angus Crichton has reportedly made a significant decision to transition to rugby union starting in 2027.

Crichton has been considering a shift to rugby for some time but has remained with the NRL, where he has represented both the State of Origin and the Australian Kangaroos.

The Roosters have experienced substantial departures from their backline to rugby union recently, with Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii already leaving. Crichton is now set to join Mark Nawaqanitawase in moving to the 15-man code after the conclusion of the 2026 season.

According to News Corp, Crichton has secured a two-year contract with Rugby Australia for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, positioning him to potentially compete in the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will take place in Australia.

The 29-year-old will stay in Sydney and is expected to play for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition.

While details about his earnings in rugby union remain undisclosed, it is believed that he turned down lucrative contracts from the Roosters and other NRL clubs to pursue this opportunity.

Having been a previous Australian rugby Schoolboys player, Crichton's departure will create another vacancy for the Roosters to address. This recent exit, alongside that of Nawaqanitawase and the anticipated retirement of 2026 signing Daly Cherry-Evans, leaves the tri-colours with considerable financial resources to explore in the free agency market.
