AJ Brimson deserves a spot on the England team to salvage the Ashes series. While Jack Welsby is undoubtedly a top talent in English rugby, he shouldn't be the fullback for the second game if England hopes to extend the series against Australia to a decider.
In the opening match of this three-game series, played before over 60,000 fans-the largest crowd in English rugby league Ashes history-England displayed sufficient physicality. However, their performance raised red flags regarding their tactical effectiveness.
Despite the forwards managing to hold their ground to some extent, the statistics did not fully reflect their efforts. Shaun Wane and his coaching team were especially troubled by the lack of fluidity in their attack.
Although they crafted some scoring opportunities through effective ball distribution, for much of the game, they struggled to threaten the Australian goal line. Ultimately, the only solace for the home team came from a consolation try by Daryl Clark in a disappointing 26 to 6 defeat.
Prior to the match, there was a belief within rugby league circles that England's strongest chance of victory would come in the opener. Given Australia's limited time to adjust and prepare, expectations were cautiously optimistic. However, as the match progressed, it became increasingly evident that the Australians were the team finding their rhythm first.
