Australian rugby league is facing a heated debate surrounding the tackle height, with English rugby league and world rugby union officials taking a strict stance on contact above the armpit.
However, senior coaches in the game argue that the sport can maintain its "gladiatorial" quality and reduce head injuries without lowering the tackle height.
The Rugby Football League (RFL) in England has already announced plans to lower the legal tackle height to below the armpit by 2025, citing player safety and the risk of concussion as reasons for the change.
Meanwhile, Australian Rugby League Commission representatives have chosen not to comment on the RFL's decision.
While Australian rugby league already penalizes tackles above the armpits in certain age groups, some players are concerned that the physical nature of the sport is being threatened.
Newcastle Knights halfback Jackson Hastings took to social media to express his frustration, stating that soon tackles will only be allowed around the legs, rendering the sport more similar to touch football.
Former NRL player Cameron King also shared this sentiment, mourning the potential loss of the traditional rugby league.
