Sky Sports Rugby League Commemorates Bill Arthur One Year After His Passing

A year after his death, Sky Sports Rugby League honors the legacy of beloved broadcaster Bill Arthur, who passed away on July 24, 2024, at 68 after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer, diagnosed in 2011.

Bill was a cherished member of the Sky Sports family, and his absence is deeply felt by his friends and colleagues.

He joined Sky Sports in 1991 and was integral to the inception of summer rugby and Super League.

Following Eddie Hemmings' retirement in April 2019, Bill became the lead rugby league commentator.

His broadcasting career included notable moments, such as calling Gareth O'Brien's golden-point drop goal in the 2016 Million Pound Game, a critical moment that ensured the Salford Red Devils' Super League survival against Hull KR.

He also covered the poignant scene when Rob Burrow made his last appearance for Leeds Rhinos against Bradford Bulls in 2020.

One of his most memorable calls came during the dramatic finish of that year's Grand Final, where 19-year-old Jack Welsby secured victory for St Helens over Wigan Warriors in the final seconds of the match.
