The 1973 Matthews Cup Sharks, led by future Club Captain David Hatch, emerged victorious in the age-group competition, bringing home the first NSWRL representative trophy to the Cronulla club.

Coached by Ted Glossop, who would later become the Sharks First Grade coach, the team displayed their skill and determination throughout the tournament.

They defeated the Roosters 18-0 and the Bulldogs 15-5 on their journey to the final, where they triumphed over the Panthers with a score of 10-5.

This remarkable victory was celebrated by a group of players from the 1973 team, who gathered at Sharks at Kareela for the 50-year anniversary of their title success.

During the event, the former players reminisced about the memorable moments from that season and paid tribute to their fallen teammates.

The day before the celebration, several members of the '73 team had the opportunity to attend the NRL captains run training session, where they met coach Craig Fitzgibbon and the current Sharks players.

Kylie Lucas from the Sharks Commercial department expressed her congratulations to the players and conveyed apologies from Chairman Steve Mace and CEO Dino Mezzatesta, who were unable to attend the function due to their commitment to the Sharks v Knights NRL match in Newcastle.

Nevertheless, Mace and Mezzatesta acknowledged and congratulated the team for their achievement.
