NSW State of Origin coach Michael Maguire is facing a tough start to his debut series, with another injury setback leaving him scratching his head.

The Blues are dealing with a string of injuries leading up to game one on June 5, and now South Sydney's Cody Walker has added to the woes.

Despite a rocky start to the season, Walker had a standout performance in the recent game against the Cowboys, showing glimpses of his true potential.

With the Blues struggling to find a fit five-eighth, Walker was being considered for the role, along with Jarome Luai and Matt Burton.

Maguire must be feeling the pressure as he tries to piece together a winning team for the State of Origin clash.

The loss of Walker is another blow in what has been a difficult lead-up to the game.

The coach will need to dig deep and rally his troops to overcome the challenges that lay ahead.
