Negotiations have commenced between the Canberra Raiders and long-time hooker Tom Starling, aiming to keep him in the capital.
Starling's existing contract is set to lapse at the end of the upcoming year, allowing him to engage with other clubs starting November 1 this year for a potential deal in 2028.
The Raiders are expected to make the first move, with The Canberra Times reporting that discussions have started to extend Starling's tenure at the club.
The 28-year-old has been a key player in the Raiders' lineup since his debut in 2019, but the rise of Owen Pattie, who has displayed promise as a future talent, has limited Starling's playing time lately.
The club has also benefited from elite depth at dummy half with Jayden Brailey joining Starling and Pattie through 2026, but this has created a congestion of hookers at the top level.
With Brailey inking a contract with the Wests Tigers for 2027, there's now more opportunity for both Starling and Pattie to take center stage next year.
Starling began his NRL career with the Newcastle Knights in 2018, making just one appearance before moving to Canberra, where he has thrived.
Having played over 150 matches in the lime green, Starling has adapted excellently to the game's faster pace, utilizing his agility and speed to gain an advantage.
Additionally, Hudson Young is preparing for a visit to Port Moresby in September after receiving permission to converse with the PNG Chiefs, who are gearing up for their NRL entry in 2028.
