Jarome Luai is gearing up for a fiery clash with Queensland's Reece Walsh in the upcoming State of Origin match, vowing to keep his cool this time around.

Last year's game two saw the two stars sent off after a heated exchange that included a headbutt, but Luai is focused on using his head in a different way on the field.

After being dropped for the third game last year, Luai is grateful for the chance to redeem himself under the guidance of new coach Michael Maguire.

The Penrith playmaker knows he can't afford to let his emotions get the best of him this time, especially with the passionate Queensland fans expected to bring the atmosphere.

Despite calling Walsh "a bit weak" for a hair pull incident in the series opener, Luai acknowledges the competitiveness of his opponent and is prepared for a tough battle on the field.

With the Blues looking to reclaim the shield, Luai is determined to stay on the right side of the referee and avoid any unnecessary time off the field.

"He wears his heart on his sleeve and he's a competitor because that's what it takes to get into this Origin arena in the first place," Luai said of Walsh, hinting at the intensity of the upcoming showdown.
