"He's already in there ripping in": The competition to fill Nathan Cleary's shoes in the halves is heating up, with two contenders emerging as frontrunners as the injured star begins his rehab work in a bid to make a triumphant return for the finals.

Daine Laurie has opted out of stepping into the five-eighth role this weekend, paving the way for Panthers coach Ivan Cleary to choose between Brad Schneider and Jack Cole to fill his son's position on the field.

Laurie, known for his versatility, could have been a natural fit to wear the number six jersey for Saturday's match against Canberra.

However, despite having some experience in the five-eighth position during his time at the Wests Tigers, Laurie has decided to stick to his usual spot on the wing for now as Nathan Cleary focuses on his recovery from a shoulder injury sustained during a clash with the Storm.

"I don't know too much about the situation with Nath's shoulder, but I'll be playing on the wing this weekend.

I'm prepared to do whatever the team needs," Laurie commented.

While the decision ultimately lies with the coach, Laurie is willing to play wherever he is needed.

He is confident in the team's abilities, expressing his willingness to adapt to any position in order to contribute to their success.

Cleary, who has been plagued by injuries throughout the season, was disappointed to come off the field early after battling a hamstring issue.

But with his sights set on a potential return for the finals, the Panthers are hopeful for his swift recovery.
