NSW has copped a blow as young gun Bradman Best is sent for scans, leaving fans on edge for the State of Origin decider.

The news comes just hours after the replacement for Latrell Mitchell was announced, with Michael Maguire making the swift decision to bring Best into the squad.

Maguire, known for his tactical prowess, didn't hesitate in selecting Best to fill Mitchell's shoes as the Newcastle centre faces a race against time to recover from a niggling hamstring issue.

Despite the setback, Maguire remains confident in his team's ability to adapt, with Matt Burton waiting eagerly on the sidelines as 18th man.

Mitchell's absence will undoubtedly be felt, as the fiery South Sydney star has been a thorn in the side of the Maroons in recent clashes.

His unfortunate foot injury suffered in the recent victory over the Eels may see him sidelined for the remainder of the season, putting pressure on the Blues to find a worthy replacement.

Best, who made a memorable debut for the Blues last year with a stunning double, is eager to seize this opportunity after missing out on game one due to a previous hamstring twinge.

The Knights star, who has been in scintillating form of late, will need to step up if he wants to replicate his heroics from last year and help NSW avoid a series defeat.

Maguire showered praise on Best, acknowledging his recent stellar performances on the field.

With the Origin decider looming, the pressure is on for the young gun to deliver and prove his worth on the big stage.
