New details have emerged about Brad Fittler's resignation as NSW State of Origin coach, with reports suggesting that the rugby league legend's decision was influenced by his family.

Fittler made some revealing comments about his family at the end of the last series, indicating that the immense criticism and scrutiny had taken a toll on his wife and children.

Speaking after NSW's 2-1 series loss this year, Fittler admitted that the constant talk and criticism had affected his partner and kids.

According to Fittler, "I've got my methods and strategies [to deal with criticism] in place for this job.

I've worked it out, but for the first time, all this talk has affected my partner and my kids." It seems that Fittler's concerns for his family's well-being played a significant role in his decision to step down as coach.

The 51-year-old had presented his case to remain at the helm, but the NSW Rugby League board only offered him a one-year contract extension.

Fittler had reportedly wanted a new two-year deal, but the board was only comfortable with a one-year extension.

The contract that was offered was also understood to be a downgrade from his previous deal, which would have included a pay cut.

Considering Fittler's previous comments about the impact of the job on his family, it was unlikely that he would accept a downgrade.

Fittler's revelation about his wife and children adds another layer to his decision to resign, highlighting the personal toll that coaching at the highest level can take.
